Californication Oliver Cooper: Final Season Twist, and Learning From David Duchovny

The book is finally closing on Hank Moody, and Showtime's Californication, the half-hour dramedy chronicling Moody's perennial quest for inner peace, punctuated with casual, kinky, and sometimes freaky sex. And since creator Tom Kapinos knew it was the end, he's set Hank up with one hell of a poignant closing storyline: the discovery of a 20-something son that he never knew he had.

Enter Oliver Cooper as Hank's new son Levon, a socially awkward weirdo who couldn't be less like his suave, dime-pulling dad. For Cooper, it's the role of a lifetime, his biggest look since starring in the 2012 teen comedy Project X. Complex got the chance to speak with him about his experience on set, learning from acting vet David Duchovny, and what's in store for the rest of Hank's final year.

[...] Mr. Turturro’s exuberant response gave us great expectations for more celebrity egg passion, but when we ventured off to The Public Theater’s world premiere of The Library last Tuesday, starring Chloë Grace Moretz, Michael O’Keefe and Lili Taylor, well, the yolk was on us. Our best guess was that the play’s subject matter—a gloomy story about a survivor of a high school shooting who struggles to have her pivotal accounts of the tragedy believed as the media sets fire to the already sensationalized slaughter—was not exactly appropriate for fun Easter egg chatter.

“I do not Easter egg hunt,” David Duchovny said after the performance with a shake of his head. He then rejected a tray of cucumber shooters that were Passover-friendly. We decided not to bring up Passover to him.

Heather Graham brings her sexy, quirky charm to the final season of Californication

Underage sexpot, junkie, porn star, stripper, spy: No, that’s not a rap sheet — it’s a list of roles Heather Graham has indelibly brought to life in her 30 years as an actor. Though raised a strict Catholic, the 44-year-old Wisconsin native is clearly not afraid to talk dirty. And with her latest role on Showtime’s edgy hit “Californication,” she takes another sexy star turn: as Julia, a former lover of Hank Moody’s (David Duchovny) and a white-hot mom.

The seventh and final season of “Californication” (Sundays at 9:30 p.m.) debuted last week, but this week’s installment introduces us to Julia, who got pregnant during her brief affair with Hank and, without bothering to inform him, had the baby and raised it on her own.

‘Californication’ Star Oliver Cooper on Playing David Duchovny's Son: I Wouldn't Have Guessed Me Either

“When you star in a hit movie like ‘Project X,’ people tell you you're gonna be a big movie star. Two years later, I just want to be able to keep working,” young actor tells TheWrap

Since his scene-stealing performance in the found-footage teen comedy “Project X,” Oliver Cooper has shared the screen with Ben Affleck and Justin Timberlake in “Runner Runner” and starred in “Four Dogs,” an indie movie he co-wrote and produced. Cooper made such an impression on “Project X” producer Todd Phillips that the director gave him a small part in “The Hangover Part III.” He most recently wrapped Joe Dante's horror comedy “Burying the Ex.”

Cooper's comedic chops landed him an unlikely role as the son of David Duchovny and Heather Graham's characters on the final season of Showtime's “Californication.” Now that fans have had a chance to familiarize themselves with his socially awkward character Levon, Cooper spoke with TheWrap to discuss the series and how his career has taken off since “Project X” made him a relatable star.
