After all the hype, anticipation and secrecy, Twin Peaks is finally back. But WTF was that premiere that just aired on Showtime (on Sunday) all about? With Kyle MacLachlan back as FBI Agent Dale Cooper and more, the first two parts of David Lynch and Mark Frost’s new 18-part installment was weird, sometimes intentionally tedious, and amazing at the same time – and something you have to watch.

Before David Duchovny became a TV legend by playing FBI agent Fox Mulder on The X-Files, he made his name as a young actor with a breakout guest stint on Twin Peaks playing a different kind of law enforcement officer. For three episodes in the kooky second season of David Lynch’s very strange soap opera, Duchovny portrayed DEA agent Denise Bryson. And for an unspecified number of installments in Showtime’s forthcoming revival of the cult classic, Duchovny will be playing Denise again. Maybe. It would seem this way, judging from this exclusive first photo of the 18-part production, courtesy of the production’s set photographer. But with this show… well, we’ll explain why we’re hedging in just a second.

Here's something you probably know about David Duchovny: He played one of the 1990s' most iconic roles, FBI agent Fox Mulder in The X-Files.

Here's something you probably don't know about David Duchovny: Only six years before landing that role, he was a Ph.D. student studying literature at Yale University, planning to become a writer.

In fact, he'd originally planned to be a poet.

For his first book, David Duchovny is not telling behind-the-scenes stories of "The X-Files" or opening up about the sex scenes in "Californication": He's written a caper about a cow that goes on the lam.

"Holy Cow" (Farrar, Straus and Giroux: 224 pp., $24) is a fable for adults, full of puns and silly jokes. A turkey is jive. A pig peppers his speech with Yiddish like a grandpa in the Catskills. In fact, the story is set in upstate New York, where the three animal heroes, led by Elsie Bovary, decide to escape their farm to fly to countries where they'll be safe from being eaten.

Duchovny, who reads and signs "Holy Cow" at Barnes & Noble at the Grove on Feb. 18, spoke to us by phone from New York.

X-Files and Twin Peaks Reportedly Coming to Blu-Ray

David Duchovny should start a coin jar to pick up all the pennies and nickels he’ll be getting from home video residuals, as both The X-Files and Twin Peaks are reportedly coming to Blu-Ray late this year or early next.

The Digital Bits have the details, where they say that in spite of no firm announcement during San Diego Comic Con International last week (where there was a twentieth anniversary panel), Fox is working to get The X-Files prepped for a 2013 release to capitalize on twenty years of the cult hit and all the attendant publicity and fan goodwill that such an event brings with it.
