ORANGE, VA (NEWSPLEX) -- When you think of David Duchovny, you probably think of the actor, but a lot of people don't realize he is also a musician, and Wednesday night, he performed in Orange. His appearance was part of a television series called "Sessions at Willow Grove," and Kelsey Summer had the chance to talk with him about his transition into music.
Duchovny is a multi-award winning actor, producer, director, author, and now, singer-songwriter, but what role does Duchovny identify with most?
"I'm all those things, I guess, depending on the day. What I tell my kids is I think we're just, if we're creative people, we create in all different kinds of ways, different kinds of media, and that's all it is. It's like trying to express the same thing in different ways, but I'm the same person," Duchovny says.
He's been on the scene for decades, but his transition to music came later in life.
"I never played music before. I've always loved music, but I never picked up a guitar until about five years ago, and then it just organically, every step of the way, started, at some point started trying to play rock n' roll songs that I like and then noticed they weren't that complicated really. I mean, it's rock n' roll. It's supposed to be pretty simple, and then, I thought I've always written poems, lyrics, always written, so I thought that would be the easiest part for me, and it probably is."

While Duchovny is most familiar with the writing process, he's hesitant to call it the foundation of his sound. However, he emphasizes the importance of lyrics in music.
"I've spent more time with lyrics than I have with music.... What's interesting about music is, about popular songs, pop songs, is music informs the words and the words inform the music. You can see lyrics on a page that you thought were terrific when you heard the song, and you're like, 'Eh, they're kinda dead on the page.' It's not a poem that has to work just on the page, but something happens when these words and music get together. Something magical happens, and that's what's kinda wonderful about pop songs."
Duchovny is an advocate of the arts and says uniqueness and creativity are essential in today's world.
"Well, I mean, it's a luxury we have to be able to create. I also think it's a necessity. People need art or beauty in their life. They need music. They need painting. They love plays, films. It's in human nature to want to enter another dimension, I think, but yet, it's a dimension that teaches us about this one."
And when asked how he wants to be remembered, his answer, may make you think.
"I don't know. I'd just like to stay alive long enough to not have to think about being remembered."
