AHLAN: 6 Question with David Duchovny - 2014

Sunday, June 15

He’s best known for his starring role in cult classic The X-Files in which he achieved legendary status as FBI agent Fox Mulder, but his most recent turn as the humorous Hank Moody in Californication brought him a new audience of fans. Unfortunately, the show is in its last season with the final few scenes already completed, but David Duchovny has already secured a role on a new programme called Aquarius. We grabbed five minutes with the smouldering star to find out how he’s coping with the transition between shows.

How did you feel on the last day of shooting Californication?
I don’t know how I managed not to cry. I’m kind of the father of the set, so I figured if I started crying, the rest of the team might just break down completely.

Now that the show’s complete, what are you gonna do next?
Well I’m in Manhattan now, but I don’t have a fixed schedule. I usually get up in the morning and figure out what I’m going to do with my day. I’m leaving for Los Angeles in July to shoot a new show, Aquarius, and it’s produced by NBC.

Your face still looks amazingly young, what’s your secret?
I’m 53 and usually people give me about five years fewer than that. I do take care of myself, but I think good genes run in my family. For instance, my sister is 46 years old, and she still gets asked for ID.

And how do you manage to keep your body staying so slim?
I love to clean my house and I love running after dust balls under the bed! You know, cleaning up is not exclusively a housewife thing any more. Having a clean and organised house makes me feel like my whole life is in order. It gives me immediate gratification, and it’s a lot cheaper than therapy!

So you don’t follow any special diets or avoid any food in particular?
Nope! I secretly love eating peanut butter! Whenever I take a spoonful of it my entire childhood flashes in front of my eyes. When I was a kid I’d eat a whole jar a day, but I try to be more reasonable these days.

Wow. What other secrets do you have that we don’t know about?
I play guitar! Well, saying that I ‘play’ might be an overstatement in my case. Honestly, I think if you heard me play, you would probably want to shoot yourself in the head – or me, as a matter of fact. My friends tell me it’s “interesting” or “experimental”, which is basically a nice way to say I suck.
