Q&A: David Duchovny on the Rocking New Season of 'Californication'

'This is more of a rock & roll year, and that's where Hank lives'

By Steve Baltin

January 3, 2013 1:00 PM ET

David Duchovny's Hank Moody, the protagonist of Showtime's hit series Californication, may be a writer by nature, but there is arguably no bigger rock star on episodic TV than the wild-living author. He's been shot at by RZA, propositioned by more women than Gene Simmons and woken up in jail, in the hospital and on the streets, all while chasing his on-again, off-again true love Karen (Natascha McElhone). On the show's upcoming sixth season, which premieres January 13th, creator Tom Kapinos embraces Moody's rock star nature, having the character write a rock opera and run in circles that include Marilyn Manson (playing himself in two episodes) and Sex Pistols guitarist Steve Jones (who plays a bodyguard).

Duchovny spoke with Rolling Stone recently about the new season, his dreams of having a Beatle on the show, why Moody is a true romantic and the rock star he patterned Moody after.

 20. Californication

Network: Showtime

Stars: David Duchovny, Natascha McElhone, Evan Handler, Pamela Adlon, Madeleine Martin

Premieres: January 13

Why we're excited: Most of the series cable has to offer are brooding, dark dramas, and we love them for it, but a little levity goes a long way. Californication is fully capable of being dark and brooding, but even still, when it's on, it's the uncontested champion of breezy, R-rated comedy.

The sixth season will find boozing author Hank Moody sacrificing his artistic integrity yet again, this time with a live musical version of one of his books. Aside from a recurring guest appearance from Maggie Grace as a rock groupie/muse (that could potentially lead to a spin-off), as well as a cameo from Marilyn Manson, not much else is known. complex.com
