OCR: David Duchovny wants to serenade you on Valentine's Day - Feb 12, 2017

Though David Duchovny is most known for his portrayal of iconic characters such as Fox Mulder of the the sci-fi horror series “X-Files” and his Golden Globe-winning performance as Hank Moody in the comedy-drama television series “Californication,” he’s also been busy composing his own music.

A few years back, before taking on the role of Sam Hodiak in the NBC period crime drama “Aquarius,” Duchovny began to teach himself how to play guitar. He’d look up chords on song sharing apps and learned “Broken Arrow” by Robbie Robertson and “Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots” by Flaming Lips. Every time he learned a new chord, he’d see where it would fit within the progression and he’d write a new song.

Exclusive Interview with David Duchovny! Talks Music, Touring, X-Files And More! - Feb 2017

David Duchovny, best known for portraying such iconic characters as Fox Mulder on The X Files and Hank Moody on Californication, will be embarking on his 2017 US Tour this February.

The two-time Golden Globe winner’s tour will include songs from his debut album, Hell or Highwater, as well as tracks from his next record, which is coming in in fall 2017. His music consists of self-penned tracks, firmly embedded in his uniquely lyrical, troubadour style.

“Making this record is a dream come true, but I never had this dream – it’s still a shock when I think about how all this music happened,” said Duchovny. “What I do know is that I feel these songs represent the truest expression that I’ve ever been able to achieve and I look forward to sharing it with everyone.”

As a longtime musician, McCusker said Duchovny is quick learner and a great band leader.

"It's a blast working with David," he said. "He's very comfortable with the band working together as a creative unit, especially since he's relatively new to the music game. It really doesn't feel like you're working with a star at all with David. He's very real."

David Duchovny covers Montecristo Magazine: Photos & Interview, December 2015

David Duchovny
Mr. Positivity.

David Duchovny doesn’t know why he suddenly decided to take up music, only that he had always wanted to play guitar. And so he picked up the instrument, initially, to amuse himself—on a whim. “It’s a total mystery to me,” he says, quipping: “It’s either that or buy a Porsche.” Taking up either endeavour would would be costly, but music seems to be the more rewarding fit at the moment.

Neither a tour nor a record was anywhere on Duchovny’s mind, and yet in late August, Vancouverites got to spend two evenings with him at his sold-out shows at Alexander Gastown. The performances were scheduled, conveniently, just as his The X-Files reboot was about to wrap filming here.

[Interview] Rain in Hell: A Conversation with David Duchovny

David Duchovny is what you might call a modern-day Renaissance Man. Throughout his career as an actor, he’s starred in two of the biggest television series of the last two decades, creating two cult characters worthy of icon status. He’s stepped behind the camera to direct and behind the scenes to produce. He even wrote a few episodes of The X-Files, the hit television show he starred in from 1993-2002 (which is making a triumphant return next January on Fox). In the same vein, he man with a masters in English Lit published his first novel Holy Cow back in February. With a seemingly incessant need to be creative, Duchovny picked up a guitar and dove head-first into the realm of rock ‘n’ roll. After much fiddling on his guitar and penning lyrics onto paper, the end result was his debut alt-rock album Hell or Highwater, a melodic and moody (pun intended) outing that captures melancholy at its best. Just before David wrapped up a brief tour with back to back shows in New York and Philadelphia, he spoke exclusively with The Rock Revival about his music, touring, and what’s next for the Renaissance Man.

Going back to the beginning, how did this project come to fruition? Was it in the works for a long time or was there a sudden lightbulb moment where you said, “You know what?” I’m going to make an album.”

Washington Times: Duchovny brings debut songs to Howard Theatre, talks of ‘X-Files’ spring resurgence

The truth may still be out there, but David Duchovny has effectively turned the lens inward. After two decades in the TV and film spotlights, Mr. Duchovny has just released his first rock album, appropriately titled “Hell or Highwater.”

“I’d never really played any music before five years ago, so it was something where I took up the guitar pretty damn late in life just to kind of amuse myself,” Mr. Duchovny told The Washington Times, adding that he wrote the tracks on “Hell or Highwater” with “the best intentions.”

Mr. Duchovny learned to play under the tutelage of Los Angeles-based guitarist Carlos Calvo, who was the official guitar coach on “Californication.” Mr. Duchovny subsequently hired Mr. Calvo to coach him privately — even taking his teacher along to his new show, “Aquarius,” and insisting his character have it written in that he was a guitarist.
