With the final season of Californication premiering this Sunday, David Duchovny ends his run as cable TV’s favorite chain-smoking, lady-loving, alcoholic novelist, Hank Moody. We spoke with Duchovny about playing Hank, season seven’s big guest star, how things end (it’s spoiler free!) and, of course, all of that nudity.

Hank Moody, the charismatically debauched novelist played by David Duchovny on Showtime's long-running series, Californication, has a habit of letting people down and a knack for charming his way back into their good graces. He's been a recurring disappointment to his on-again/off-again love, Karen (Natascha McElhone), and their teenage daughter, Becca (Madeleine Martin), but his boyish humor and lost-cause vulnerability have won him repeated chances at redemption. Although Hank and Karen never married, he's betrayed her in countless ways, once having sex with a girl who turned out to be her stepdaughter, which led to statutory rape charges and three years of probation. On top of that, he's punched a police officer, roughed up Becca's boyfriends, slept with one of his college students, smuggled drugs into a treatment center, overdosed on sleeping pills, and nearly drowned in a swimming pool while drunk.
David Duchovny was involved in the music video for Beautiful Pain, and you got to guest star on Californication. That seemed like a really cool fit. How did that all come together?
I've known Duchovny for a really long time. He and I have gotten super close in the last year or so and he is one of my partners in this record label (Best Revenge Records). He produced the video and made an appearance in it. We've been working on some music together, too. He's always been passionate about music as a music lover, and he always just thought of himself as not having the ability to do it. He's so admired and envied people that could play music. He just one day decided he'd give it a shot and picked up a guitar and he really, really loves it. He's getting better and better and I've been kind of a musical guru to him over the last year or so. It's been really wonderful because he's got an amazing brain. He's a very smart, very poetic person. He's always written beautiful poetry. Now he's evolved that into more songwriting and I'm helping to adapt that into songs. We've recorded some of his stuff and it's been super cool.
