The only difference is, this is actually happening to David Duchovny, who has gotten in touch with his inner-Hank Moody (at least, the writing part) and has followed his muse to publish his second novel, "Bucky (Expletive) Dent" and release his debut LP record, "Hell or High Water," which he sings his own lyrics and has been on the road to promote.
And, it's not like Duchovny is quitting his day job anytime soon.
Though David Duchovny is most known for his portrayal of iconic characters such as Fox Mulder of the the sci-fi horror series “X-Files” and his Golden Globe-winning performance as Hank Moody in the comedy-drama television series “Californication,” he’s also been busy composing his own music.
A few years back, before taking on the role of Sam Hodiak in the NBC period crime drama “Aquarius,” Duchovny began to teach himself how to play guitar. He’d look up chords on song sharing apps and learned “Broken Arrow” by Robbie Robertson and “Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots” by Flaming Lips. Every time he learned a new chord, he’d see where it would fit within the progression and he’d write a new song.

Exclusive Interview with David Duchovny! Talks Music, Touring, X-Files And More! - Feb 2017
David Duchovny, best known for portraying such iconic characters as Fox Mulder on The X Files and Hank Moody on Californication, will be embarking on his 2017 US Tour this February.
The two-time Golden Globe winner’s tour will include songs from his debut album, Hell or Highwater, as well as tracks from his next record, which is coming in in fall 2017. His music consists of self-penned tracks, firmly embedded in his uniquely lyrical, troubadour style.
“Making this record is a dream come true, but I never had this dream – it’s still a shock when I think about how all this music happened,” said Duchovny. “What I do know is that I feel these songs represent the truest expression that I’ve ever been able to achieve and I look forward to sharing it with everyone.”

As a longtime musician, McCusker said Duchovny is quick learner and a great band leader.
"It's a blast working with David," he said. "He's very comfortable with the band working together as a creative unit, especially since he's relatively new to the music game. It really doesn't feel like you're working with a star at all with David. He's very real."

Jokerman takes off his mask
reveals a car salesman at last
says, "grow up son, you know it's just a masquerade
now be a good boy and get me and the boss a gatorade
you can work up quite a thirst
watching all them bubbles burst.”

Song: "When the Time Comes"
Written by: David Duchovny
Album: Hell or Highwater
The future runs up ahead of me
holding hands with my sometime enemy
the present cannot keep its shit together
it's only the past that lasts forever
We will see that we have seen
our kingdom come and gone
when the time comes
Jack and Jill ran out on their bill
when Jack fell down, he found his crown
when Jill came tumbling after
that’s when they died of laughter
we recall all rhymes and songs
the exiled shall again belong
we will see that what we seek
was in sight all along
when the time comes
when the time comes
when the time comes

When the time comes
all I have done
all that is and all that was
all I’ve torn and mourned, destroyed, and undone
will be seen as one
we will be as one
when the time comes
all I have done
all that is and all that was
all I’ve torn and mourned, destroyed, and undone
will be seen as one
we will be as one
when the time comes
I know why my caged bird sings
he's blaming others for cagey things
the devil you know and the angel in the wings
are revealed as one
it's always just begun
when the time comes
he's blaming others for cagey things
the devil you know and the angel in the wings
are revealed as one
it's always just begun
when the time comes

Song: "Another Year"
Written by: David Duchovny
Album: Hell or Highwater
Another year has come and gone, another chance to right a wrong
another year has come and gone, lost another chance to rewrite the song
another home, some other love, another god set high above
some other lie we tell ourselves to pass the time before the bell

If you knew me you would stay
if you knew me you would walk away
we don't get black and white
ours is only shadow light

David Duchovny is taking his music to France, nobody saw it coming. However, the interpreter of the cult character Fox Mulder (and much less worshipped Dr. Marris in The Secret) will play with his band at La Cigale on May 12th in Paris. At 55, the star of the small screen will perform his first album, Hell or Highwater.

David Duchovny got juiced up before his gig at Glasgow's O2 ABC tonight - with a trip to a local health food restaurant. The X Files and Twin Peaks star only has a couple of dates in the UK and was keen to enjoy some of the delights of the city ahead of his concert.

ME AND MY MOTOR: DAVID DUCHOVNY, STAR OF X-FILES — FLASHY, FAST CARS ARE AN ALIEN WORLD - May 2016
Californication, electric cars and the leap into music
THE TRUTH is out there — and it’s electric, according to David Duchovny. The 55-year-old actor insists we will soon stop burning petrochemicals and run battery-powered cars instead. The world will be a cleaner and healthier place, he says. It’s certainly a contrast to the dark vision of the future portrayed in The X-Files, the television series that made him famous.
Duchovny’s preferred mode of transport is a Ford C-Max hybrid, which he drives partly because it does not attract attention but mainly because in it he can cruise around his home town of New York on battery power alone.

Forward: Enter David Duchovny’s (Half) Jewish New York, Through His New Novel - April 2016
For both David Duchovny and the protagonist of his latest novel, “Bucky F*cking Dent” (Farrar, Straus and Giroux) literary talent runs in the family. The “X-Files” actor and late-blooming musician is the descendant of several generations New York writers. The son of a Jewish father and a Scottish mother, he grew up in the East Village.
When I sat down with him at Barnes & Noble before a reading he gave last week, I asked, “What’s the most Jewish thing about you?”
“My sense of humor,” he said, without missing a beat.
Mr. Duchovny’s on-screen comic chops are well-known, from his early appearances on the late Garry Shandling’s “Larry Sander’s Show” to his starring roll in “Californication.” But his incisive wit really shines on the page, where he paints scenes so hilarious they might make you spit out your coffee.

David Duchovny can't wait to come to Scotland to celebrate his Aberdonian mother - April 28, 2016
THE X FILES star says it was his Scottish mother who set him on the road to success on screen, in music and as a novelist.
HE IS one of the world’s most sought-after TV actors – and David Duchovny credits his Scottish work ethic for his success.
Duchovny, who found fame in the 90s as Fox Mulder in Chris Carter’s long-running X-Files television series, says his mum’s Highland roots rubbed off on him growing up in New York.
Meg Miller, a school administrator and teacher, emigrated from Aberdeenshire and fell in love with writer and publicist Amram Duchovny.

The Friends of Distinction - 'Grazing In The Grass'
“I bought 45s when I was a kid because they were cheaper, at 99 cents, where an album cost three dollars and 69 cents, which was too much for my budget. The first single I bought was called ‘Grazing In The Grass’. It’s kind of an R&B/soul number. ‘Grazing in the grass is a gas, baby, can you dig it?’”

Sunday Times: David Duchovny: Mulder and Scully bury the hatchet and start unearthing secrets again - Feb 2016
Relations used to be cold, but the actor says he now has fun with his co-star Gillian Anderson. Though he has to admit he forgot about their baby
THERE are only two reasons to go to Hollywood Boulevard: to see the stars or to buy drugs. David Duchovny fans can now do both at once. His star on the Walk of Fame (the 2,572nd), which I watched being unveiled two weeks ago, sits in the midst of the dope dealers and a few feet from the Smoke House, a shop specialising in hookah pipes, vaping kit and anything you might need to satiate the munchies.
I realise how fitting this is when I meet Duchovny in a Los Angeles hotel a little later on. I find a man so monosyllabic and monotone that he appears either to have been smoking heavily or to be on the brink of falling asleep. In fact he is just tired.
