Rolling Stone: David Duchovny on the End of 'Californication' - June 30, 2014

"I always wanted Hank Moody to die," the actor says of his character. "That would have been my way of ending it"

The sun set on Californication last night, after seven years of drug orgies and actual orgies. And finally, David Duchovny's character – the Bukowskian author Hank Moody, who took part in hilarious Dionysian fetes that would've made even Fellini wince – has gotten the bittersweet ending he deserved.

Variety David Duchovny Interview: Californication season 7 finale: Here's how Hank and Karen's story ended

WARNING: “Californication” fans who have not watched the series finale should stop reading. This interview with star David Duchovny contains spoilers about that episode.

After seven seasons of charting the booze-soaked escapades of writer-cum-lothario Hank Moody (David Duchovny in a role he was born to play), Showtime’s Emmy Award-winning series “Californication” comes to its fruitful end, awash in the sunny promises of happily-ever-after and the power of the epistolary proclamation of love.

Hank and Karen are back together. Again. At least for now.

TV Guide David Duchovny Interview: Californication Series Finale: Did Hank and Karen Get Their Happy Ending?

[WARNING: The following story contains spoilers from Sunday's series finale of Californication. Read at your own risk.]

Californication's Hank Moody said it best on the Showtime comedy's series finale: "I'm a sucker for happy endings."

After seven seasons of breakups, breakdowns, and tons of drug- and alcohol-fueled bad behavior, the love story of Hank (David Duchovny) and Karen (Natascha McElhone) finally came to a close. Although they began the episode on different pages with regard to their daughter Becca (Madeleine Martin) and her sudden wedding, Hank eventually came around — with a little help from his friends.

The Sun Sets On ‘Californication’: David Duchovny Discusses the Show’s Rock n’ Roll Connection (Q&A)

This Sunday night (June 29th at 9:30p ET/PT), after seven memorable seasons, Hank Moody and his very distinctive ‘Californication’ crew will say farewell. When the credits come up on that last episode of the popular Showtime series, it will also mark the end of one of the most authentically rock n’ roll shows to ever grace the screen according to Sex Pistols’ guitarist Steve Jones, an authority on the subject who has played Krull for the final two seasons. Jones credits ‘Californication’s musical supremacy to the show’s creator, Tom Kapinos. “Tom has a good sense of the rock n’ roll world for sure, because he loves [it], he plays guitar himself, I think he reads everything about music and I think he just knows a lot more than most who write for TV shows,” Jones tells Billboard. “Hence it comes out cool and not cheeseball.”

Over the past seven seasons, ‘Californication’ has been more than just a home for great music for everyone from Tommy Stinson, Joseph Arthur, Lily Haydn and Darker My Love to the Rolling Stones, Foo Fighters, Elton John and Warren Zevon -- the show’s unofficial artist in residence whose “Keep Me In Your Heart” during the final episode of season two remains one of the series’ most enduring musical memories. It’s also been a home for great musicians; in addition to Jones, Marilyn Manson, Rick Springfield and RZA had recurring guest starring roles on the show.

“We’re Tom Kapinos’ rock n’ roll fantasy camp,” says the show’s star, David Duchovny. As author Hank Moody, Kapinos’ rollicking and rocking alter ego, Duchovny has learned to play guitar, sung the Band’s “The Weight” on stage at L.A.’s Greek Theater and written a musical biography of fictional iconic producer Lew Ashby. “Tom is a big music lover. I guess Moody is such a wish fulfillment fantasy for a writer like Tom. He’s a writer that has a rock n’ roll lifestyle,” Duchovny says.

TV Guide: David Duchovny Shares His Favorite Episodes of Californication

After seven seasons of sexually transmitted comedy, Californication's vice-ridden writer Hank Moody is hanging up his black T-shirt (Sunday, June 29, 9:30/8:30c, Showtime). While Golden Globe—winning star David Duchovny admits "there's some sadness" to saying goodbye to the role, "I feel good. [Executive producer] Tom Kapinos did a great job pulling everything together."

Next month, Duchovny begins shooting NBC'sAquarius, playing a cop tracking Charles Manson, which marks the X-Files vet's return to creepy TV. "We'll be pushing the limit," he says. "It will be as dark as a network show can be."

But before that, we asked him to look back on some of his favorite times in the Californication sun.

Rolling Stone Interview: David Duchovny "It's Not Done Until One of Us Dies"

David Duchovny on 'The X-Files': 'It's not none until one of us dies.' The actor also discussed his next role, a cop in pursuit of Charles Manson, in advance of the 'Californication' series finale

With the series finale of Californication airing this weekend, David Duchovny says he feels like he has comfortably closed the book on his character Hank Moody. That's not the case, though, for another one of his iconic characters: The X-Files' Fox Mulder. During an in-depth interview with Rolling Stone about the end of the long-running Showtime drama, which will run next week after the finale, he said that he would be up for making a sequel to the 2008 movie The X-Files: I Want to Believe.

"I would always want to do it," he said. "I wish we'd done more already. I wish the second one did better business. I think it did OK business, but not the kind of business where you get to do another one right away."

Rolling Stone: Inside 'Californication' and 'Louie' Actress Pamela Adlon's NSFW World

How the Emmy winner went from 'King of the Hill' to one of most talked-about actresses on incisive, adult sitcoms
When Pamela Adlon's oldest daughter was going into middle school, the actress suffered a mini-meltdown. Another mom had said that she allowed her children – a seventh grader and a nine-year-old – to watch Californication, the sexually explicit Showtime comedy series about debauched yet well-meaning novelist, Hank Moody (played by David Duchovny) and his equally depraved friends, one of whom is the professional pubic-hair waxer Marcy Runkle, played by Adlon. "I was thinking, 'How is she explaining "stunt cock" to her kid – or is she not?'" Adlon says in her distinctly husky voice from her L.A. home. "I was so upset that I cried when I was driving my daughter and her friend home after school."

AHLAN: 6 Question with David Duchovny - 2014

He’s best known for his starring role in cult classic The X-Files in which he achieved legendary status as FBI agent Fox Mulder, but his most recent turn as the humorous Hank Moody in Californication brought him a new audience of fans. Unfortunately, the show is in its last season with the final few scenes already completed, but David Duchovny has already secured a role on a new programme called Aquarius. We grabbed five minutes with the smouldering star to find out how he’s coping with the transition between shows.

How did you feel on the last day of shooting Californication?
I don’t know how I managed not to cry. I’m kind of the father of the set, so I figured if I started crying, the rest of the team might just break down completely.

Rob Lowe on Californication and how he became Eddie Nero

Excepted from book "Love Life" (2014) by Rob Lowe

"I kissed a man recently, and with romantic intent. I liked and admired him very much, and professionally he is as good as anyone in his field, but truth be told he isn’t conventionally attractive. In fact, he is not tall, lacks any hair whatsoever and is a bit older than anyone I would likely be interested in kissing, regardless of gender.

But I did it anyway, and not without the apprehension you would expect from someone completely new to that sort of thing. I wondered what my wife would think. Since I was being paid for it, I figured she’d be okay with it. And considering the circumstances, I took solace in knowing she wouldn’t be asking me, “How long has this been going on?” or “Do you love him?”

Emmys: David Duchovny and Other Actors Reveal Their Toughest Scenes

DAVID DUCHOVNY

Californication (Showtime)

It's always hard to end a season. It's even harder when you know it's going to end the series. I would catch myself thinking, "This is the last scene I'm going to do with [actor Evan Handler], aka The Runkles. This is the last god-awful herbal cigarette. This is the last time I try to convince the very English co-star Natascha McElhone to pronounce something incorrectly by lying to her ('I swear that's how we say schedule -- just like you, shedule!')." It was very nostalgic, like being at a three-month wake, but the happy kind, with singing and dancing.
